Do You Need a Website If You Already Have Instagram? An Honest Answer

For businesses that take orders through Instagram: what a website actually adds in ownership, reach, Google visibility and trust.

We hear this objection a lot: "I take orders through Instagram, questions come in by DM, why should I pay for a website?" It is a fair question. The short answer: Instagram is your shop window, and a website is the shop whose deed is in your name. They do not do the same job. Let's go through it one item at a time.

Your Instagram account is not really yours

You run the account, but Meta owns it. Rules change, an account can be suspended by mistake, and one morning a notification can land on your phone saying your account has been disabled. There is an appeal path, but finding someone to talk to is hard, and for as long as it takes, your customers cannot reach you.

A detail people discuss less: your follower list is not yours either. If you wanted to move to another platform tomorrow, you could not take that audience with you. On a website, the domain, the content and the contact details you collect belong to you. Nobody can shut it down and nobody can change the rules on you. That is also why we hand over every project together with its source code: the site belongs to the client.

Your reach is in the hands of an algorithm

Not all of your followers see your posts; an algorithm decides who gets shown what. Reach that looks good this month can drop next month even though you changed nothing. At that point your only lever is to raise the ad budget.

A website has no middleman like that. A page that ranks on Google once keeps bringing in visitors while you sleep. A service page you write once works for years; an Instagram post disappears down the feed within a few days.

Customers search for you on Google, not on Instagram

When people have a need, "dental appointment", "wholesale packaging", "carpet cleaning price", they type it into Google. Your Instagram profile either does not show up in those searches or sits far down the list, because posts are effectively closed to search engines and the profile gives you a single link in the bio.

On a website you can open a separate page for every service you offer. Each page catches a different customer searching for that one thing. There is no way to build that structure on Instagram.

The customer looking for a price or an address will not send a DM

The customer who asks a question in your DMs is the boldest link in the buying journey. The silent majority asks nothing; they want to find the price, the address and the opening hours on their own. When they cannot, they move on to the next business. The "DM for price" approach filters that group out before it even starts.

There is a trust side to it as well. Before real money changes hands, people want to verify the business: is there a real address, who is behind it, what has it done before? A business that exists only as an Instagram profile leaves some customers with the feeling that it might not be there tomorrow. Your own domain and a tidy site answer that question before it is asked.

When you run ads, where does the traffic land?

If you run Instagram ads and send the click to your profile, that person scatters: looks at a couple of posts, taps into a story, leaves. Who clicked, how many asked about price, which ad actually paid off; none of it can be measured clearly.

Send the ad to a page on your own site and the picture changes. The page has one goal: fill in the form, call, or place an order. With a pixel and conversion tracking you see how many customers each ad brought in. As the budget grows, carrying on without that measurement turns into spending you cannot account for.

How the two work together

The right question is not "Instagram or website". It is "which job do I give to which".

  • Instagram is your discovery channel: new work, the daily flow, behind the scenes.
  • Your website is your closing point: price, detail, appointments, orders and the trust check all happen there.
  • Your bio link points to the site, and the customer who lands on the site can follow you on Instagram if they want to.

In practice the loop runs like this: a customer discovers you on Instagram, moves to the site, sees the price and the details, then fills in the form or calls. It works the other way round too: they search on Google, find your site, glance at your Instagram, see that your work is current and relax. The two channels feed each other; neither one replaces the other.

You do not need a big investment to start. Even a single well built landing page covers three jobs at once: bio link, ad landing page and Google visibility. Our Landing Page starts at $500 + VAT and goes live in 1-2 business days. You can look at the other options on the pricing page, and describe the job you have in mind in a few steps on the quote form. Do not drop Instagram; give it a partner and run the two together.
